Installing GLASSquote Windows on a Network
Networking Operating Systems
We recommend the Microsoft Windows operating system, using a Windows 95,
98, or NT server, with Windows 95 or 98 workstations. If you use another
Network OS, such as Novell, it must support long filenames.
Network Protocols
We recommend using the IPX/SPX networking protocol, and are also
compatible with TCP/IP. The NETBEUI protocol can corrupt the GLASSquote
Windows software database, and should not be used.
You should probably have a qualified computer technician do this for you,
unless you are very comfortable with computers.
To check this on your computer, right click on the network neighborhood
icon from the desktop and select properties. You should see all of the
network components installed listed. If you have anything that says NETBEUI,
remove it. If you do not have IPX/SPX in the list, click on ADD, PROTOCOL,
ADD, Microsoft, IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol, and OK. If it adds an IPX/SPX
Protocol linked to your dialup adapter, remove it.
WARNING: make sure you restart your computer after you make ANY
networking changes.
Drive mappings
To use the client/server feature of GLASSquote Windows you will need to
install the software on the server in a folder that is shared with other
computers on the network. You must also make sure that the folder structure
is the same from all computers.
For example, if you install the software on the server in the C:\GQWIN
directory, the workstation must have access to the C: drive. You can map
that C: drive as another drive letter from the workstation, but the software
must still be accessed by [drive]:\GQWIN.
Here is a specific example:
Server Installation
- Install the server version of the software to the c:\gqwin folder of
the server.
- Share the C:\ folder of the server on the network.
Workstation Installation
- From each workstation, map an E: drive to that shared folder on the
server.
- Install the client version of the software to the e:\gqwin folder on
each workstation.
This will cause the GLASSquote Windows software folder to be accessed
from the server as "C:\GQWIN", and from the workstations as "E:\GQWIN"
Network Security Issues
You must give all workstations using GLASSquote Windows change access
rights to "E:\", "E:\GQWIN", and all subdirectories found in "E:\GQWIN" for
your software to work correctly.
